GENE-5 and CMURC expand offices to Midland Community

GENE-5 and CMURC are teaming up to bring programs and investment for high-tech, high-growth companies looking to commercialize technologies in the Great Lakes Bay Region. This strong partnership builds upon the already proven CMURC accelerator program and adds the next level with GENE-5 investment opportunities.

As a Michigan SmartZone, CMURC promotes resource collaborations between universities, industry, research organizations, government and other community institutions, growing technology-based businesses and jobs.

“The accelerator program is a three phased, milestone-based program designed to provide the framework with accountability to entrepreneurs to go from idea to commercialization,” said CMURC President + CEO Erin Strang.

The program is designed to assist entrepreneurs in building business structures around innovative technology, identifying the right market, establishing the supply chain and ultimately securing the necessary partnerships and financing. In the past 6 years, 187 entrepreneurs entered in to phase 1, with 91 of those progressing to phase 2, 45 companies advancing to phase 3, resulting in 39 commercialized products with sales. Once entrepreneurs have completed the program, GENE-5 will serve as the next level of resources towards investment and strategic partners.

“Our region is vibrant and full of potential. We have worked with CMURC in the past and believe that this partnership is essential to accelerate business and community growth,” said David Dittenber, co-founder of GENE-5. “We want to be the catalyst and lead the way to a healthier and more prosperous future one innovation at a time.”

The founders of GENE-5 all have ties to the Great Lakes Bay Region and chose to locate their business in Midland with plans to make investments of over one million dollars. This move gives GENE-5 the ability to partner with local STEM programs like the Midland STEM center.

GENE-5 will be opening its office in Midland this Fall. CMURC will be expanding to Midland in 2020 and is currently looking for innovation partners that are interested in supporting the entrepreneurial community.

“We are pleased to hear of CMURC’s plans to open a location in Midland. CMURC brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to Midland and will add valuable tools for entrepreneurship and innovation in our community,” said Tony Stamas, President & CEO of the Midland Business Alliance. “The MBA looks forward to working with CMURC and our other University and Educational partners to grow Midland’s entrepreneurial community.”
